NEW! If you purchased "Combing Through Leominster's History" and noted the lack of an index, you will be pleased to know that the Combing Index has been completed! John A. "Jack" Taylor, who grew up in Leominster, and contributed his story to the book, created the index after months of patience and hard work. Our thanks and gratitude to Jack for his herculean effort. Click on the title to download your FREE PDF copy of the index, or click here.

Be sure to read about Leominster's "New" Town Hall, in this week's Champion. Mark Bodanza, our local historian, has added a monthly column about Leominster's history to the weekly community newspaper.

On Sunday, April 20th, 2008, we will hold our Annual May Basket Workshop. Reservations may be made at 978-537-5424. Space is limited, so don't forget to leave your name and phone number!

What are May Baskets? Filled with flowers or candy, tradition has it that a decorative May basket should be hung on the recipient's front doorknob. The bell is then rung, and the giver races to hide behind a tree or some bushes. From this hidden vantage point, children can watch with great delight as their beautiful gifts are received. Tradition also says that if you are caught while delivering a May basket, you are owed a kiss.

Leominster Historical Society is a private, non-profit organization supported entirely by the dues and contributions of its membership and donors. The Society is dedicated to the preservation of local history, through records, collections and properties. Organized and incorporated in 1906, the Society encourages and promotes the history of Leominster and history in general, and has played an active part in the community throughout its first 102 years.

Meetings and programs are open to the public, and you are encouraged to join the Historical Society in our efforts to preserve historical artifacts and provide interesting programs.

Member Benefits: Members receive the Society's quarterly newsletter, advance notice of public programs, and invitation to member-only exhibits/receptions. Research at the Society is free for members.

We encourage people to come in to the Society for research if possible, as we have numerous  original resources for both genealogy and history as they pertain to Leominster and its citizens. Our all-volunteer staff is on duty during our regular hours. You may wish to call to schedule an appointment.

Our hours of operation are: Tuesday and Saturday, 9am - 12 noon or by appointment. Contact us by email or phone 978-537-5424 for more information or an appointment.

The Historical Society is located at the old brick schoolhouse, formerly Field School, (behind City Hall) on 17 School Street, Leominster, Massachusetts. We welcome community use of the Society's resources for research, and all are welcome to view exhibits at the Society Museum. Please call ahead for school groups.

We seek any photos or artifacts of the school's past, along with any stories of the school that you might remember, to be featured in a display. If you attended Field Primary school, and/or have any memorabilia of the school, we'd like to talk to you. Please contact us at the phone number or email address below.
